It Is What It Is - Stallion #1 - Judging Horse Flesh

Many times people breed without knowing the relatives of their horses or without knowing the history of the horse (i.e., what it looked like as a foal and how it developed). People then act surprised when the resulting breeding does not come out as planned.

To pair horses together and produce the best possible, you need to match certain traits together to influence or strengthen certain areas or not to influence/double up on faults in other areas.

Another mistake people make is not being able to "see" the real horse beneath the coat and hair. Look very closely at the bone structure in this horse and you will see that the proportions have remained the same throughout his development. Note especially the slope of the shoulder and croup and hind leg placement.
