A Broodmare's Prayer

To thee, master of my foals, I offer my prayer. Feed me, water and care for me, and when I am close to delivering a foal, provide me with shelter, a clean, dry bed, and stall wide enough for me to lie down in comfort. When my treasure is born, treat him with kindness and give him the care he needs to grow strong and wise.

Always be kind to me and my foals. Your voice means as much to me as does your time spent with my treasured foal. Pet me sometimes, that I may serve you the more gladly and learn to love you. Handle my foal with gentleness and often. Do not chase us, and do not whip me around the paddock. Never strike, beat, or kick me when I do not understand you. Do not be afraid of me. Watch me, and if I fail to do your bidding, see if something is not wrong with my feet or health.

Do not contain me so that I cannot see my pasture mates. If you insist that I am stabled for buyers who come to look at my treasured foal, I pray you provide us with bedding, food and water while we wait. Do not leave me in the sun all day or tie me where I cannot drink. Keep my feet trimmed. Examine my teeth when I do not eat, do not let me founder on green grass, or let abcesses and wounds stay open, for that, you know, is very painful. Do not tie my head in an unnatural position, or take away my best defense against flies and mosquitoes by cutting off my mane and tail.

I cannot tell you when I am thirsty, so give me clean, cool water often especially since I am providing milk for my foal. Save me, by all means in your power from fatal diseases that are easily prevented by vaccinations and keep us wormed. I cannot tell you in words when I am sick, so watch me daily, that by signs you may know my condition. Give me all possible shelter from the hot sun, and please don't let my pasture get dry and grass-less. In the spring, never force a stallion upon me but let me tell him when I am ready.

I try to provide you with foals each year, and endure the pain of weaning from my best friend and treasured foal. Without the power to choose my mates or friends, I am sometimes kicked by more aggressive horses or treated unkindly by farm hands. I cannot choose how far you will go to treat my illness, since a weak horse requires more effort you may dispose of me. Remember that I must be ready at any moment to lose my life while breeding and foaling for your profit.

And finally, OH MY MASTER, after I have made you much money by giving you my foals year after year, when I am old and my useful strength is gone, when I cannot give you the foals you desire any more, do not turn me out to starve or freeze, or sell me for profit without a care to be slowly tortured and starved to death, but do thou, My Master, take my life in the kindest way, or give me to someone who will love me 'til the end. You will not consider me irreverent if I ask this in exchange for the sacrifice I have made and for the lives I have given you.
